     Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Manipal was established on 30 June 1953 as the first self-financing medical college in the private sector.
In 1958, when the first class of students graduated, KMC was granted recognition by the Medical Council of India followed by the recognitions of General Medical Council of Great Britain, the Malaysian Medical Council and United States Medical Licensing Examination Board in the later years.
The college started at Manipal with the pre-clinical section. Before this, the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. In 1969, when the clinical program started, KMC became a full-fledged independent college.

     Started in 1963 by the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India, St. John's has grown to be listed as one of the top medical educational institutions in the country. The Supreme Court of India, granting the privilege of conducting its own entrance test, declared St. John's Medical College as standing on a different footing altogether among the private medical colleges in the matter of admissions made strictly on the basis of merit. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a Review Committee of the University Grants Commission, has recognized the excellence of St. John's Medical College and Hospital and accorded it with a 5-star grading.
Reaching Out to the Medically Unreached St. John's Medical College offers graduate, postgraduate, diploma and super specialty degrees recognized by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, Karnataka. The mission orientation of the institution is to train healthcare professionals, especially to serve in the medically underserved areas of the country. Medical students execute a bond to serve in such areas for two years after their graduation. About 25% of them are permanently working in remote areas, and are committed to addressing the desperate health needs of these unreached rural populations.
At present, a total of 726 students are undergoing their training in Medicine and Paramedical courses. A total of 608 staff, both teaching and non-teaching are on the payroll of the College and rendering their services to the best of their abilities. Alumni and faculty of the institution hold eminent positions in various fields associated with medicine and health care, nationally and internationally.
The high quality of academic and research work undertaken by the qualified and dedicated teaching staff of the college has attracted grants from different parts of the world.      Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was started in 1955, utilizing the clinical facilities of the Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. In 1961, the pre-clinical section was started in Mangalore.
The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore became an independent unit in 1977. Apart from the two Government hospitals, there is a teaching hospital attached to the College viz., the KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992 with a bed strength of 500.The infrastructural facilities are comparable to international standards with seven big air-conditioned lecture halls fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids including multi-media projectors and a modern, fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of about 500, and with internet facility. The library has over 10,000 books and subscribes to more than 350 journals annually.
In the year 2001, Centre for Basic Sciences was started at Bejai for the first year students. Apart from the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, there are two lecture halls of capacity 250 each. Both ladies and boy’s hostels are located within the Basic Sciences Complex for the first year students. The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore provides hostel accommodation for its students in nine hostels. Out of these five are lady’s hostels. There is also a Medical Education Unit which conducts Orientation program for students, interns and postgraduates, and also provides resource material for the teaching faculty members.
 The Medical Council of India, with the first graduating class of KMC, granted recognition in 1958. Recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council soon followed. New programs, faculty research and student amenities have steadily developed over the years. The first College to be developed as a private partnership model in medical education and health care delivery, KMC, Mangalore ranks among the top 25 medical colleges in the country today; the medical college with the highest ICMR STS awards in the country.      The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was started as a private Medical college in the year 1955 by Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society Were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In the year 1957 it was handed over to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and then on to the Bangalore University. In the year 1996 it got affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

     Mysore Medical College is one of the oldest and most reputed medical colleges in India. When started in 1924 by Sri Krishnarajendra Wodeyar, it was the first in Karnataka and the seventh in India. Today its name and fame has spread beyond any imaginable boundaries and its children have contributed in alleviating human suffering all over the world.
It is a Government medical college and is hence also known as the Government Medical College, Mysore. The college is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.
Admissions to undergraduate courses can be gained through the CET (Common Entrance Test) conducted by the Government of Karnataka or through the All India Entrance Examination.

     M. S. RAMAIAH MEDICAL COLLEGE, was started in the year 1979 and has since grown into an institute of recognition and repute in India and abroad.      Kempegowda Institute of Medical Science was established in the year 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore, Karnataka. The Vokkaligara Sangha took a formal decision on 2.9.1979 to start a medical college from the year 1980-81 and applied for permission to the Registrar, Bangalore University.
KIMS is recognized by the Medical Council of India permanently for running of MBBS Course since 1980-81 and also running Post-graduate degree/diploma courses since 1991-92 and these courses are also recognized by Government of India.
