Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore is a private,
minority-run educational and research institute that includes a network of primary, secondary and tertiary care hospitals in and around Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of
the most respected medical destinations in India and internationally. It is also one of the top-ranked medical
colleges in India. Founded in 1900 by an American missionary, Dr Ida S. Scudder, CMC has brought many significant achievements to
India, including starting the first College of Nursing in 1946, performing the first reconstructive
surgery for leprosy in the world (1948), performing the first successful open heart surgery in India (1961),
performing the first kidney transplant in India (1971), performing first bone marrow transplantation (1986) in India and

Jawaharlal
Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research originated as Ecolede Medicine
de Pondichery established by the French Government in the year 1823.
This
medical school was converted into Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of de
facto transfer of Pondicherry to Government of India.
This
Medical College was later upgraded into Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate
Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
Kasturba Medical College (KMC)
Manipal was established on 30 June 1953 as the first self-financing medical
college in the private sector.
In 1958, when the first class
of students graduated, KMC was granted recognition by the Medical Council of
India followed by the recognitions of General Medical Council of Great Britain,
the Malaysian Medical Council and United States Medical Licensing Examination
Board in the later years.
The college started at Manipal
with the pre-clinical section. Before this, the students had to go to Mangalore
for their clinical training. In 1969, when the clinical program started, KMC
became a full-fledged independent college.
The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was
started as a private Medical college in the year 1955 by Mysore Education
Society. The Founders of this Society Were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr.
B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In the year 1957 it was handed over
to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and
then on to the Bangalore University. In the year 1996 it got affiliated to the
Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Glaucoma, Paediatric Dermatology, Paediatric Anaesthesiology, Accident Trauma &
Emergency Care, Community Ophthalmology and Dermato Surgery with 2 seats
each. Para-medical courses are Medical lab technician, X-ray technician,
Medical record technician, Health inspector, Ophthalmology, Operation Theatre

The Government General Hospital, one
of the premier Institutions in the country was started on 16th November 1664 as
a small Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company. It was
the untiring inspired efforts of Sir Edward Winter who was the agent of the
company that materialised in the first British Hospital at Madras.
In its early days the Hospital was
housed at the Fort St. George and in the next 25 years grew into a formal
medical facility. Governor Sir. Elihy Yale was instrumental in the development
of the Hospital and gave it a new premise with in the Fort in 1690.
In the early part of 1850 the school council
submitted proposals to the government to accord the status of a College. The
Government granted this request and from 1st October 1850 it
became Madras Medical College.
The first batch of students graduated in 1852 and
were granted the Diploma of Graduate of the Madras
Medical College. In 1857, it gained affiliation to
the University of Madras. After the affiliation in 1857 the College moved to be
a center of excellence imparting training in all the specialities in the field
of medicine and surgery and it is now one of the premier institutions in the
country with under graduate, post graduate and super speciality courses.
The Courses offered by the Madras Medical College
are affiliated from 1988 to the “The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University”
Started in 1963 by the Catholic Bishop's Conference
of India, St. John's has grown to be listed as one of the top medical
educational institutions in the country. The Supreme Court of India,
granting the privilege of conducting its own entrance test, declared St. John's
Medical College as standing on a different footing altogether among
the private medical colleges in the matter of admissions made strictly on the
basis of merit. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a
Review Committee of the University Grants Commission, has recognized the excellence of St.
John's Medical College and Hospital and accorded it with a 5-star grading.
Reaching Out to the Medically Unreached St.
John's Medical College offers graduate, postgraduate, diploma and super specialty
degrees recognized by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS),
Bangalore, Karnataka. The mission orientation of the institution is to train
healthcare professionals, especially to serve in the medically underserved
areas of the country. Medical students execute a bond to serve in such areas
for two years after their graduation. About 25% of them are permanently
working in remote areas, and are committed to addressing the desperate health
needs of these unreached rural populations.
At
present, a total of 726 students are undergoing their training in Medicine and
Paramedical courses. A total of 608 staff, both teaching and non-teaching are
on the payroll of the College and rendering their services to the best of their
abilities. Alumni and faculty of the institution hold eminent positions in
various fields associated with medicine and health care, nationally and
internationally.
The high
quality of academic and research work undertaken by the qualified and dedicated
teaching staff of the college has attracted grants from different parts of the
world. The present number of 367 teaching staff work in the Preclinical, Para
clinical, Clinical and Super-specialty departments of the college and hospital.
The
Hyderabad Medical School which came into existence in 1846 A.D. was the
fore-runner of Osmania Medical College. The medium of instruction was Urdu; the
degree was Hakeem. Last two decades of nineteenth century was the glorious
period of this school. Seventh and the last Nizam of Hyderabad Nawab Mir Osman
Ali Khan established Osmania University in 1919 A.D. and in the following year
the Hyderabad Medical College. In 1957 A.D. Hyderabad became the Capital of
enlarged Andhra Pradesh. Tremendous zeal and enthusiasm was evident to achieve
all round progress in medical education.
Medical
Education, Research and health care of the people are vastly improved by the
presence of medical college and teaching hospital in any area and in an

Stanley
Medical College is a government medical college
with hospitals, located in Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Though
the original hospital is more than 200 years old, the medical college was
formally established on July 2, 1938. Stanley Medical College and Hospitals is
one of the oldest and well known centers in India in the field of medical
education.
Stanley Hospital is one of the oldest
Medical centers in India for medical treatment and education, the seeds for it
having been sown as early as 1797 by the East India Company. Stanley Medical
College is rated one among the top medical colleges in the country.
